Architecture and landmarks

The North Shore, which includes neighborhoods like Tompkinsville, Clifton, and St. George, is the most urban portion of Staten Island and is home to several historic districts, including St. Paul’s Avenue-Stapleton Heights Historic District and St. George Historic District, both of which are known for their large Victorian homes.

The East Shore is famous for its 2.5-mile boardwalk, which is the fourth largest anywhere in the world. Transport

There are three vehicular bridges as well as one railroad bridge that connect Staten Island to New Jersey, one bridge that connects this borough to Brooklyn, and various tunnels and bridges that can get commuters from Staten Island to Manhattan. There is only a single pedestrian link: The Bayonne Bridge, getting walkers to New Jersey. Compared to other areas of NYC, there are more cars in Staten Island than anywhere else, though there are still numerous public transportation options including the Staten Island Ferry, buses, and the Staten Island Railway system.

There are a number of public schools in Staten Island, all of which are overseen by the New York City Department of Education. Staten Island Academy is the only private, non-religious grade school in Staten Island – it is one of the oldest of its kind in the United States. Hospitals in Staten Island include Staten Island University Hospital North Campus, Richmond University Medical Center, NYC Health, Bayley Seton Hospital, and Nalitt Institute for Cancer and Blood Related Diseases. There are also more than a hundred private practices within the borough.

As with any borough, some neighborhoods are safer than others, but overall Staten Island is the safest borough in New York. Under the protection of 4 police precincts, the island had a crime rate of around 6 reported crimes per 1,000 residents in 2016.

Staten Island offers a ton of activities for residents and visitors, including the 8-acre Staten Island Zoo, which is open all year, the Staten Island Children’s Museum’s interactive exhibits, the 100-acre living history complex at Historic Richmond Town, the scenic Clove Lakes Park with its ponds and playgrounds, and the picturesque Staten Island Light House. Sports fans can be found at the Richmond County Bank Ballpark, while fans of the sea, architecture and the arts are likely to visit the Snug Harbor Cultural Center. The FDR Boardwalk and Beach is one of the longest boardwalks in the world.

Those with an appetite have a number of top restaurants to choose from, including the Mediterranean favorite Blue with its waterfront views and incredible seafood dishes, home-cooked Italian foods at Enoteca Maria, and the casual pizza spot Pier 76. For drinks, the Denino’s Pizzeria & Tavern is a family-friendly option with tons of pizza options and local beers, while Jimmie Steiny’s Pub and 1001 Nights are staple watering holes for late nighters.

Once home to the largest landfill in the world, Fresh Kills Landfill, Staten Island has decided to redevelop the area as Freshkills Park which, when completed, will be the second largest public park in New York City and dedicated to habitat restoration.
