Architecture and landmarks

The oldest building standing in the Bronx is the Van Cortlandt Mansion, completed in 1748. The borough is home to a host of impressive architectural projects completed by some of the top architects of their time, including Standford White, Heins and La Farge, and John Russell Pope.

Yankee Stadium is one of the most popular landmarks in the Bronx, but there are plenty of other attractions, including the 250-acre New York Botanical Garden, the Bronx Zoo, Wave Hill with its public garden and incredible views of the Hudson River, and the museums, playgrounds, and dog runs found at Van Cortlandt Park.

Transport

There are three major thoroughfares running through the Bronx (Third Avenue, Broadway, and Park Avenue), though more than 50% of people living in this borough don’t have a car. Instead, residents take advantage of the six lines of the NY Subway that run through it, with a total of 70 stations. There are also several commuter rail lines and a handful of buses.

Schools

School-aged children have their choice of a wide range of both public and private schools in the Bronx, and many of the schools here actually draw students from outside the borough. Elite public schools in the area include the Bronx High School of Science, Bronx Collaborative High School and the Bronx Charter School for Excellence.

Health

The Bronx is home to nearly a dozen hospitals, some of which have unique specialties. St. Barnabas Hospital has been around since 1866 and is part of the new CUNY School of Medicine that was created in 2016. Montefiore Medical Center is affiliated with the Albert Einstein College of Medicine and has several different divisions, as does Bronx Lebanon Hospital.

Safety

As is the case with most any borough in NYC, some of the safest neighborhoods are located in the Bronx (City Island, Riverdale, Spuyten Duyvil, Silver Beach, and Country Club), but it’s also home to some of the neighborhoods with the highest violent crime rates (Port Morris, Hunts Point, Longwood, Mott Haven, and less so, Belmont).

There’s no shortage of things to do in the Bronx, but local residents are quick to suggest heading to Arthur Avenue for some authentic Italian food. The $2 billion Yankee Stadium is on virtually every baseball fan’s bucket list, and Wave Hill is an incredible public garden with unique and awe-inspiring views of the Hudson River. Plant lovers shouldn’t miss a chance to tour the New York Botanical Gardens, while visitors to the Bronx Zoo Wildlife Conservation Society, which is the biggest urban zoo in the country, count it as a must-see.

Things to do

For a break from the hustle and bustle, there may be no better spot than City Island, with its quaint, New England vibe, and Pelham Bay Park offers more than 12 miles of incredible saltwater shoreline. Fans of craft beers should be sure to stop by The Bronx Brewery to sample their delicious, rotating beers, and the Bronx Museum of the Arts is considered by some to be one of the best art museums in the state.
